History of the Pine Castle Fire Department 1948-1981

In 1947, a group of local men formed the Pine Castle Volunteer Fire Department. They purchased a lot at 1106 East Wallace Street and began building a fire station. While their building was under construction, they rented the newly built Pine Castle Woman’s Club, becoming their first renters.

The Pine Castle Fire Station was completed in 1948. In time they served an area roughly bound by Michigan on the north, Sand Lake on the south, I-4 on the west, and Conway/Semoran on the east. They soon had the largest tax basis in Orange County, with three stations, unparalleled equipment, unparalleled fire fighters, an award winning Ladies Auxiliary, and a community who loved them….

  1. Clyde G. (Jerry) Waldrop says:

The year was 1956 and I had been assigned to Pine Castle AFB. Living only one or two blocks from the old PCV fire department, I joined later that year. We drove and fought fires with a 1939 home made Chevy pumper and a 1935 Ford Pumper. During my 3 years with the unit, we added our 1942 or so, Chevy Emergency Truck and large water Tanker. The tanker was a former aircraft gas truck. I think about 1000 Gal. I loved my time with the unit and met so many great guys. The chief was a Retired WWII pilot and owned a drag line company. Another officer lived across the street from the station and was a Orlando fire department. In 1959, I was transferred to March AFB, CA. Sadly, this ended my Fire Dept volunteer work. At 86 and living in Melbourne, FL, I still remember those days like yesterday.

    • Kim P says:

Greetings Mr. Waldrop! Thank you for sharing your precious memories with us about your time at the Pine Castle Fire Department. Many people today don’t realize that fire departments in many small communities were staffed by volunteers. These brave people would get the call at all hours of the day and night, put on their gear and help their neighbors in need. Thank you for serving our nation in the U.S. Air Force and for serving the people of Pine Castle. Thank you, again, for sharing your memories with OrlandoMemory.info. ORLANDO MEMORY TEAM

My father William E Bailey was retired from here. It says that you lost contact with him. Daddy passed away from cancer on 9/11/07.

    • Kim P says:

Greetings, Linda. Thank you for visiting Orlando Memory and leaving a comment about your father. We are sad to hear of his passing, but are thankful that now his former colleagues will know.
