William Bartram, an American 18th-century naturalist and explorer, wrote a book titled “Travels,” detailing the plants and landscape he encountered during his time exploring Florida in the 1770’s. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was a British poet who used Bartram’s Travels for inspiration when writing his poem Kubla Khan. Many experts believe that Bartram’s description of Blue Spring, near Orange City, was the description used by Coleridge in his poem. This newspaper article from 1969 compares the descriptions in both pieces of writing.
