U.S.S. Richard S. Bull – Photo Album of Neil Fischer – WWII

Neil Joseph Fischer was stationed at the Sanford Naval Air Station after serving in the Navy in the Pacific Theater in World War II, making Central Florida his home. He and his wife lived off base in a garage apartment and attended All Souls Catholic Church.

Neil enlisted in the Navy the day before his 18th birthday on 5 October 1943 and served as a Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class on the Destroyer Escort Richard S. Bull. Neil loved his time in the Navy but when his wife became pregnant with their first child (me), he returned to his home in Savannah to settle down and left the Navy behind.

Neil died on 15 April 2010 in Savannah, Georgia after an over 15 year battle with cancer. While going through old documents and photos, a scrapbook containing 43 pages of original photos taken on and of the Richard S. Bull was found.

Crews Addresses circa 1946. There was one name on the crew list that was not legible. I had it listed as Kra??er, R. W. On 24 November 2010 I received the following email from Craig Kratzer: “My Father Richard Wayne Kratzer served on ‘the Bull’ during WWII. Do you see his name anywhere on your crew list? Any information on the ship you can send me would be appreciated. Thanks!”

Crew Members Identified

On 1 September 2011 I received the following email from Paul Muncie and his wife Anne Smith Muncie:
On you website with the ship and crew photos, I noticed some names by “page 39, bottom row, photo 2 (the photo with 5 sailors standing by a jeep). The tall one is my late father-in-law, James Robert Smith. He was from Forsyth, Ga., but he and the family moved to Mississippi in 1962. He passed away in March, 1982. The fellow on the far right is John W. (Doc) Davis. He was a pharmacist on the ship, then worked as a mortician the rest of his life. James’ daughter and I have been married almost 32 years, and I was fortunate enough to meet Doc and his wife, and spend time with them on several occasions. I think the middle man in the photo is Ray Lee, but I will have to let my mother-in-law look at it to verify.

Daddy considered it an honor to serve his country in the U. S. Navy. I began researching his service on D.E. Richard S. Bull in 2006, but it was difficult to get info from Daddy as his larynx was the first battle lost to cancer. Daddy would send short responses to my e-mail inquiries as he was not a typist, but always tried to answer my questions. I wish I had found this photo album before he died so I could have asked him about all the photos. Here are two of his e-mails.

On 11 May 2006, I asked Daddy about the battles he participated in while serving on the Richard S. Bull in WWII. He responded via email:

Hi Sweetie,
I was in five invasions in the Pacific in World War two….I was in the return to the Philippines, called the second battle
because we returned. I was in the battle for Saipan, the battle of Okinawa. I was in the battle of the Philippine Sea, where the entire Jap navy got their tails kicked by Bull Halsley. It was touch and go because we only had 5 inch guns and the Japs had battle ships, etc. Thank God Bull got their in time to save us. I was in the battle of Luzon and I can’t remember the other one. You might pull up the Richard S. Bull DE 402 and get the rest of the story. Hope this helps you. Love you and all of yours, Daddy

On 15 May 2006, Daddy responded to an e-mail I sent him about the small size of the Richard S. Bull.

Hi Sweetie,
It was a little ship. We had a crew of 185 and we were really crowded on board. It didn’t bother me because I slept by my gun. It was rear quad 40mm that was designed to fire 80 rounds a minute. Your old daddy adjusted his to fire 125 rounds per minute. I was glad I did when I saw a goofy kamikaze coming down my sights. He didn’t make it or I would not be writing this note. Love, Daddy

In researching the photos, crew member Herbert Arnold sent this email 13 Aug 2010 explaining its origins:
…During the war years we were unable to have cameras aboard ship. However, there was one person assigned as a photographer. I think his name was Abe Steinberg. After the war when he was discharged from the Navy he took the film home and had the film developed. He contacted each of us and asked if we would like a copy of the pictures. I ordered a copy and it is the same copy of films that your dad has and you have now. I remember your dad but I do not remember particulars after all of these years. All Gunners Mates and Torpedomen served in “O” division. They were a great bunch of fellows and we all got along well together…”

Below you will find photos listed as they appear on each page in the scrap book, and a link to individual photos found on the page. If you can identify anyone in the photos or any of the locations, please send me the information and I will update. Please refer to a photo by page number and photo location. Example: Page 34, top row, 2nd photo. The small photos are about the size of a business card, the larger ones about 3×4″. An * indicates that Daddy is in the photo. Contact: Kim Marie Fischer @ gmail.com if you can identify any of the crew members or locations.

Neil Joseph Fischer, Sr.

Neil Joseph Fischer, Sr.

Neil Joseph Fischer, son of John George Fischer and Catherine Margaret Gildea, was born October 6, 1925 in Savannah, Georgia. The third of four children born to Johnny and Katie Fischer, Neil was baptized at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, was an altar boy at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and attended Marist School for Boys.

Neil's roots run deep in Georgia soil, his ancestors having secured land grants in the Colony of Georgia in 1763. As a young man, Neil showed Tennessee Walking horses with Bob and Edith Jenkins competing in events throughout the South. It was the Jenkins who introduced him to his future bride, Mary Ann Saraf whom he married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in 1951.

Neil was a member of the "Greatest Generation," proudly serving his country in World War II as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class, U.S. Navy aboard the Destroyer Escort Richard S. Bull in the Pacific Theater.

Neil worked at Joe's Place on Victory Drive with his Uncle Joe Gildea from the age of nine and later at Gildea's Bar with other family members after his Uncle died in 1946. Neil also ran a candy making business with his brother in law George Tabakian for a short time, but he made the automobile business his career. In Savannah, Neil worked at Ray Clanton Motors, McDonald Lincoln Mercury, Dixie Chrysler Plymouth, and DeRenne Chrysler Plymouth, and was the proprietor of Fischer Auto Parts on Waters Avenue and DeRenne Avenue. In 1970, Neil acquired Leesburg Chrysler Plymouth in Lake County, Florida, where he was known as "The round man with the square deal."

Neil enjoyed fishing, bowling, golf, and flying. His love for flying led him to get his pilot's license in 1961. Neil was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, and some of his happiest times were at the Georgia games. Through the years, Neil developed strong relationships with the coaches and many of the players.

Neil had a big heart and was always helping others. While in Leesburg, he helped sponsor a large Vietnamese family rescued during the fall of Saigon in 1973. Today, all are faith-filled, proud, hard working Americans.

Neil is preceded in death by his brother John (Buddy) Fischer, his sister Henrietta (Retta) Russell, and two grandsons. Neil is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann Saraf Fischer; his children: Kim Marie Peters (Oliver), Neil Joseph Fischer, Jr. (Judy), Robert Anthony Fischer (Jayne), Michael Steven Fischer (Gabriella); grandchildren: Oliver Christopher and Ashley Erin Peters, Catherine Margaret, Patrice Hope, Robert Anthony, Geoffrey Edward, Patrick, Alexis Nicole and Mary Sophia Fischer; brothers, Francis (Bootsie) and Charles (Chuck) Fischer, and many nephews and nieces.
