Saint James Cathedral: This is where God lives…

September 11th, 2011 oral history interview with Orlando attorney Michael R. Walsh at Saint James Cathedral in downtown Orlando. Hear highlights from his interview in this excerpt.

LISTEN Part I (6:21)

Mr. Walsh came to Orlando in May 1964 and remembers how beautiful it was to go to Mass in the old church. He says, “At St. James you felt really as if you were home to start with….. St. James, of course, it is an integral part of the downtown community of Orlando and as the Cathedral, it has great influential ties to the Central Florida area in many, many different respects…. It was one of the first churches in the area, if not the first, to go into feeding the homeless, Daily Bread.”

“At daily Mass at 7 o’clock there’s a group of people that come into your life that you would never really encounter unless you did something like that. And then there are other people as you branch out into activities at St. James that enrich your life in many respects by bringing people to God through what they do.”

Mr. Walsh serves as a Eucharistic Minister to the Sick bringing Holy Communion to those in nursing homes and homebound residents. He has been active in Legal Aid in Orlando since 1965.

He is currently listed as Best Lawyers in America by Neifeh and Smith, Best Lawyers in the U.S. by Town and Country Magazine, Florida Super Lawyers – Top 100. Mr. Walsh received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 from the Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association. He is a Life Fellow of the Florida Bar Foundation and a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and the Royal Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
