MILITARY MEMBERS IN ALL SOULS CATHOLIC CEMETERY
All Souls Catholic Cemetery on 25th Street in Sanford, Florida, dates back to 1890, and the first military veteran interred there appears to be George Bailey who died December 22, 1891. George was born in 1846 or 1847, and according to the inscription on the tombstone, George was an infantryman of Company D, 43rd Regiment New York. Records indicate that George Baily enlisted at age 18 at St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York, and was mustered in as a private in Company D, Battalion on January 6, 1865. He mustered out with his company at Washington, D.C., as George Bailey on June 27, 1865. (43rd Infantry New York, Report of the Adjutant-General, p.1107)
George is not the only Civil War veteran interred at All Souls Catholic Cemetery. Henry Brandt served with the Illinois 57th, Company G. He was born in 1839 and died in 1923.
Memorial Day 2022
In 2022, Mary Valente, Director of Cemetery Operations, All Souls parishioner Dave Segbers, and Beatriz Atorresagasti, publisher of the Sunday Bulletins for All Souls Catholic Church, worked together to create a three panel tribute to all the veterans interred in the cemetery.
Photographing the Tombstones
Dave Segbers expressed his desire to honor the veterans interred in the cemetery by photographing every tombstone belonging to a member of the military. Dave enlisted the help of his wife Avon and daughters Peggy and Diane, who checked every tombstone and marked any indicating military service with an American flag so Dave could easily locate them. Dave photographed every marker and sorted the images into alphabetical order.
Creating the Display
Beatriz Atorresagasti worked tirelessly with the photographs, enhancing every image to make them easier to read. Then she created a three-panel collection, listing the veterans in alphabetical order. The panels were displayed in the vestibule of the church on highway 46 in Sanford for several weeks before and after the Memorial Day weekend.
Remembering Our Veterans
Beatriz Atorresagasti, who creates the weekly Sunday Bulletin for All Souls parish, featured articles about the project, the parish customs for honoring our veterans, and a special piece on one of our treasured World War II veterans, Ramon Bernard.
Ramon Bernard
On Memorial Day 2022, parishioners at All Souls Catholic Church remembered and honored our fallen heroes who died in service to their grateful nation. In addition, we paid tribute to one of our last living World War II patriots, Ramon Bernard.

There is something odd about Matthew's tombstone in the images above as it has Connecticut on it and he is not from, nor never lived there. There is a possibility that he served in Connecticut or on the U.S.S. Connecticut, but that ship had nothing to do with aviation.
What a wonderful historic cemetery with veterans from our military dating back to the Civil War! We are, indeed, the Land of the Free because of the Brave! Thank you for sharing these tombstones of our veterans.
