Each October 31, library staff members are allowed to embrace their inner child and celebrate Halloween. There is a pumpkin carving contest and staffers are permitted to come to work in costume. WHAT FUN!!!
In years past, the branch libraries would decorate, and all the staff members would participate in the fun. In 2002, the library news crew set out with camera in hand to check out the branches and departments at Main who participated in the fun, creating an epic tale entitled: “The German Princess and the Lonely Eyeball.”
Several staff members at the North Orange Branch in Apopka used L. Frank Baum’s fourteen OZ stories as their inspiration. One staff member named Kim merely added a hat and a broom to her normal library attire and fit right in, scaring the bejeebers out of another staffer named Jenifer who came as the Scarecrow.
The following Halloween in 2003, the video starred Dav Pilkey’s hero “Captain Underpants” and Neil Diamond! Neil, aka Special Services Department head Jim Myers, regaled the crowds with some of his top hits, including “Sweet Caroline.”
Hogwarts residents from Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin were seen working at the Orlando Public Library on Sunday October 31, 2010. (Rod, Amanda, Kim, Jen – holding a Firebolt!)
